New grant launches to help encourage children to cycle and walk to school

Released: Tuesday, 24 September 2024

We're looking to work with schools across Adur and Worthing to help fund projects or equipment that will encourage children to travel to class sustainably.

We recently launched our active travel to schools grant, which is inviting local schools to apply for funding from our government-funded grant pot of £24,000.

Our aim is to give 12 schools an equal share of the fund to support projects that would help pupils cycle or walk to school. This could be achieved through increased bicycle parking, funding special breakfast clubs or the purchase of an adapted bicycle.

The grant has been funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which in Adur and Worthing has also paid for the installation of 170 new bicycle racks and four repair stations, which allow cyclists to adjust or repair their bikes on the go.

Adur's two tool stations can be found beside the bike racks near Perch on Lancing Beach and outside the front of The Red Lion pub on Old Shoreham Road. The two in Worthing are located on the promenade outside the Pavilion Theatre and near the shops on Findon Road in Findon Valley.

We have contacted schools directly about the grant, but if you have an idea of how your child's school could use the funding, we're sure they would appreciate your input. The deadline for schools to submit their ideas is Friday 27th September 2024.

We'll share more on the grant and how it will be making a difference to the community once we reach the next stage of the project.
